Angela Su

b. 1958, Hong Kong, China; lives and works in Hong Kong, China.

Angela Su’s works investigate the perception of the body and its image in a socio-political context. Through techniques and studies of metamorphosis, hybridity, and transformation, Su’s research-based projects materialize in drawing, video, embroidery, performance, and installation works. Video essays and texts feature significantly, and in these works, Su often embodies different alter-egos, weaving together fact with fiction, and reality with fantasy. The works aim to reimagine the female mind and body to create sites of resistance against injustice.

Angela Su’s recent exhibitions include representing Hong Kong at 59th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia presenting Angela Su: Arise, Hong Kong in Venice, commissioned by M+ and HKADC (2022); So long, thanks again for the fish, Levyhalli, Suomenlinna, Helsinki (2021); Sala10, Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo, Mexico City (2020); The Drawing Center (New York City, 2020); 100 Drawings from Now, Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing (2020); Woven, Frieze London, London (2019); Artists’ Film International, Whitechapel Gallery, London (2019); Contagious Cities: Far Away, Too Close, Tai Kwun, Hong Kong (2019); Pro(s)thesis, Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, Vienna (2017); The 2nd CAFAM Biennale – The Invisible Hand: Curating as Gesture, The 2nd CAFAM Biennale, Beijing (2014); and The 17th Biennale of Sydney, 17th Biennale of Sydney, Sydney (2010).
