In this short film of just 4 minutes and 7 seconds, a silent, static camera view of an industrial site is just about perceptible. The screen is filled predominantly with the sky, as a large and ever-growing cloud of smoke billows across the open expanse and consumes the frame. In the bottom fifth of the screen, we see the tops of two indeterminate pieces of large industrial apparatus. Maybe they are chimneys, exhausts or burning flares? One of them seems to be producing the smoke. It could be filmed at dusk, or it could just be the industrial cloud dulling the sky’s natural light. It could equally be an adjusted hue of the film itself, bringing the overall colour down to a cold blue. Either way, it is a ghostly image that locates us in an ambiguous way geographically, but nonetheless encourages an emotional response to the idea of place and infrastructure.
